The Clinical Severity of COVID-19 Variants of Concern: Retrospective Population-Based Analysis

While the wild-type strain dominated infections worldwide throughout the first year of the pandemic, the sudden increase in disease severity by the end of 2020 prompted the World Health Organization to implement a program that classified SARS-Co V-2 into variants of interest and VOCs [1]. Different sources of transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in the environment [2] and risk factors in society have accelerated its diffusion and its mutations into VOCs and their current subvariants [3].
