Alterations in vital parameters can often be found hours before a life-threatening event occurs [1-7]. In current clinical practice, postoperative monitoring often consists of a period of continuous monitoring in an intensive care or postanesthesia care unit, followed by an admission to a general ward. Since continuous monitoring of vital parameters is not present in the general ward, nursing staff performs the so-called spot checks to monitor the patient’s vital parameters.
