The digital divide model by van Dijk [10] describes how personal and contextual factors are related to the resources one has available to have motivation, physical access, use, and benefit from digital media, or in this case, digital health. Resources to improve the likelihood of accessing digital media involve cultural, social, mental, material, and time-related factors [10].

Van Deursen et al [13] used performance-based assignments to measure usage skills of people in the general population, which showed that older age and lower educational level were predictive of lower operational and formal skills, the practical skills needed to use and navigate on a computer and on the internet.
