Social Semiotics of Gangstalking Evidence Videos on YouTube: Multimodal Discourse Analysis of a Novel Persecutory Belief System

For this study, we identified a genre of You Tube videos wherein TIs have posted videos to provide irrefutable evidence of their persecution and harassment. Figure 1 depicts a typical title screen of a video from this genre. You Tube provides a democratic and accessible medium where those affected can post videos to advance their point of view. In contrast to other social media platforms that are primarily text or image based, You Tube is a video-sharing platform.

Although previous investigations have examined the content of You Tube videos on infectious diseases such as Ebola [26,27], H1 N1 influenza [28,29], West Nile virus [30], and Zika virus [31], we did not identify any published studies that have investigated the content of You Tube videos related to COVID-19. This study, therefore, aimed to address this gap in current knowledge. The sample of videos was delimited to the 100 most widely viewed You Tube videos uploaded throughout the month of January 2020.

The Connect Epeople You Tube channel [18] was set up in March 2018 to share project webinars and videos. Webinar videos were cut into short accessible videos and are available to the public on the You Tube channel. The team collected a wide range of data to determine the most meaningful and impactful information. Qualitative data and feedback from RAPs and other stakeholders and quantitative data, including the number of responses, the time taken to respond, and preferred mode of communication, were recorded.
