Effect of Immersive Virtual Reality on Chemotherapy-Related Side Effects in Patients Receiving Paclitaxel-Carboplatin With or Without Bevacizumab: 2-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial

Effect of Immersive Virtual Reality on Chemotherapy-Related Side Effects in Patients Receiving Paclitaxel-Carboplatin With or Without Bevacizumab: 2-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial

Since the commercial availability of a simple immersive VR (i VR) device in 2016, medical applications of i VR have rapidly advanced, demonstrating effectiveness in reducing intractable chronic pain that has not responded to drugs [3] and reducing anxiety in hospitalized patients with breast cancer [4].

Patients’ Perception of a Brief Web- and Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Pain Following Discharge After Total Joint Arthroplasty: Qualitative Description

Patients’ Perception of a Brief Web- and Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Pain Following Discharge After Total Joint Arthroplasty: Qualitative Description

Pain after total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is expected, but little is known about pain after discharge [1]. As the length of hospital stay after surgery continues to decrease, it is essential to develop our knowledge regarding pain and its management in the subacute postoperative phase. A recent meta-analysis found the prevalence of moderate to severe postoperative pain ranges from 51%, one day after discharge, to 58%, 1‐2 weeks after discharge [1].

Variability in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome: Internet Survey

Variability in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome: Internet Survey

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a multifactorial, chronic urinary bladder syndrome. Common symptoms of IC/BPS include dysuria, dyspareunia, urgency, a persistent or recurrent sense of bladder pain or pressure that is often exacerbated as the bladder fills and is temporarily relieved after voiding, frequent urination or with little warning, nocturia that disrupts sleep, and associated burning or other abnormal urinary sensations [1].

Experiences With a Multicomponent Digital Behavioral Pain Management Intervention for Adults With Sickle Cell Disease: Qualitative Analysis of the CaRISMA Trial

Experiences With a Multicomponent Digital Behavioral Pain Management Intervention for Adults With Sickle Cell Disease: Qualitative Analysis of the CaRISMA Trial

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by recurrent acute episodes of severe pain, commonly referred to as “pain crises,” and chronic pain that can persist between these episodes. The unpredictable nature of SCD-related pain, combined with the physical and emotional burden of living with a chronic illness, leads to high rates of depression, stress, and reduced social support [1,2].

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Psychological Intervention for Internalized Health-Related Stigma Among Adults With Chronic Health Conditions: Preliminary Investigation

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Psychological Intervention for Internalized Health-Related Stigma Among Adults With Chronic Health Conditions: Preliminary Investigation

For example, adults with obesity, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, skin diseases, HIV, chronic pain, and cancers face pervasive stigma for their health conditions [1,4-6]. In addition to experiencing stigma from other people, negative attitudes can be internalized by adults with these health conditions, contributing to self-blame and self-devaluation (ie, self-stigma) [7,8].

Effects of Medical Ozone Injection via Intervertebral Foramen Epidural Space on Postherpetic Neuralgia: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled and Double-Blind Clinical Trial

Effects of Medical Ozone Injection via Intervertebral Foramen Epidural Space on Postherpetic Neuralgia: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled and Double-Blind Clinical Trial

The risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) ranges from 5% to more than 30%, and over 30% of patients with PHN experience persistent pain for more than 1 year [5,6]. Moreover, patients with older age, immunosuppression, diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, psychological stress, and organ transplant are more likely to experience HZ and PHN [4,6,7]. Currently, the treatment strategies for HZ include antiviral drugs, pain control, and prevention of PHN [1,7].

Health Services Usage in Patients Receiving Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder or Long-Term Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain: Retrospective Cohort Study

Health Services Usage in Patients Receiving Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder or Long-Term Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain: Retrospective Cohort Study

The specialties initially considered were cardiology, emergency medicine, family practice, mental health, oncology, orthopedics, and pain medicine. The mental health category included visits with clinicians who have a specialty in psychiatry, psychology, or social work. Effect of Live Environmental Music Therapy and Prerecorded Music on State Anxiety, Stress, Pain, and Well-Being Levels of Patients and Caregivers in the Emergency Department Waiting Room: Protocol for a Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial

Effect of Live Environmental Music Therapy and Prerecorded Music on State Anxiety, Stress, Pain, and Well-Being Levels of Patients and Caregivers in the Emergency Department Waiting Room: Protocol for a Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial

More recent studies highlight the benefits of prerecorded music in reducing anxiety [14-16] or pain [17] levels in adult patients in ED observation rooms. A study on live music therapy in emergency rooms was conducted by Mandel et al [18], including 180 patients (90 intervention, 90 control) who received music therapy sessions over a 3-year period.

Effects of Remote Web-Based Interventions on the Physiological and Psychological States of Patients With Cancer: Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis

Effects of Remote Web-Based Interventions on the Physiological and Psychological States of Patients With Cancer: Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis

Regarding the management of physiological pain in patients with cancer, some studies have shown that remote web-based interventions can improve the intensity of physiological pain [19-22], yet other studies have pointed out that remote web-based interventions did not significantly improve the physiological pain of patients with cancer [23-25]. Some even indicated that remote web-based interventions could exacerbate the physiological pain of patients with cancer [26].

Implementation and Evaluation of a Therapeutic Communication Educational Program for Nurses: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study

Implementation and Evaluation of a Therapeutic Communication Educational Program for Nurses: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study

Especially in the dynamic and acute setting of the acute admission ward, patients are susceptible to anxiety, stress, and pain [1,2]. In the acute admission ward, many medical procedures, such as invasive exams and surgery, are well known for causing preprocedural anxiety and stress, with a reported prevalence ranging from 11% to 80% among adult patients undergoing surgery [3,4].
