The Evolution of Medical Student Competencies and Attitudes in Digital Health Between 2016 and 2022: Comparative Cross-Sectional Study

The Finnish-language survey questionnaire consisted of 16 statements (Q1-Q16) measured on a 5-point Likert scale (“Fully disagree” to “Fully agree”), surveying students’ attitudes to digital health and their self-perceived digital competencies. The survey used in 2021 and 2022 was adapted from the 2016 survey by changing the term “medical doctor” to “health care professional,” as nursing students also participated in the 1-day course in 2021 and 2022.

Based on the results of the focus group and the survey, the evaluation criteria were revised and finalized and ended up in a long questionnaire, which is described in the results section. The developed questionnaire was evaluated with apps from the following categories: (1) Nutrition, (2) Exercise, (3) Mental Health, and (4) Symptom Checker. These categories were chosen because they cover the main fields of healthy lifestyle.

The questionnaire’s content was developed based on qualitative data (interviews and focus group) from 7 CR professionals and literature on obstacles and potential application areas for DT in health care [21-23].

Participants were included in the trial if they met the following inclusion criteria: (1) mild to severe depressive symptoms on the Japanese version of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) [31] with scores between 10 and 27, (2) aged 18 years or older, and (3) owning and able to use a smartphone/tablet device. Participants were initially introduced to the study through web-based advertisements disseminated from June 16, 2023, to October 31, 2023.

Designing Chatbots to Treat Depression in Youth: Qualitative Study

The study included a questionnaire, a semistructured interview, and a concurrent think-aloud session with a chatbot prototype. We chose interviews because they allowed us to gather rich, detailed data on participants’ problems, coping strategies, attitudes and expectations, and chatbot design preferences. Participants were eligible if they were between 14 and 17 years of age, owned a smartphone, and met diagnostic criteria for a current or remitted depressive episode.
