Strokes may be prevented with regular use of anticoagulation, either vitamin K antagonist, such as warfarin, or one of the newer oral anticoagulants that do not require routine monitoring. However, poor adherence to anticoagulation in AF is common. Discontinuation rates in clinical trials for the novel oral anticoagulants (NOAC) were 15% to 34% [54-56]. Claims data indicate that only 49% to 67% of NOAC users have satisfactory fill rates 9 to 12 months following the initial prescription [57,58].
