A more detailed description of the case for a low-cost device for monitoring HR during PAP therapy can be found in the thesis by Gardner [10]. We previously proposed a device consisting of a modified PAP mask that simultaneously measures electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals from the wearer [11]. However, both ECG signals [12] and PPG signals [13] can be affected by motion artifacts, which during PAP therapy can occur from whole body movements that occur naturally during sleep.
